Tone Scientizt: Tessanne Chin

Even though we’ve just recently ended Women’s History Month (and not that it needs to be for this post) I am still gonna bring another female artiste to your attention as promised. Her name is Tessanne Chin (or Tessanne), a Jamaican-born singer who is as unique as her music. Both beautiful and powerful, Tessanne is not your run-of-the-mill female reggae singer, she is a rootsy, reggae rock singer with a pop edge that makes her style palatable to a wide international audience.

Tone Scientizt: Romain Virgo - The System

Reggae singer Romain Virgo released a new album today. The System (VP Records) is his second full length release since his musical debut in 2010. Already having attained the title of Reggae Artist of the Year for 2012 by JaRIA, this new project will be sure to solidify his position in the reggae arena. As the title suggests, The System is full of songs about the struggle of survival in Jamaica. Even though the songs are a window into parts of Romain’s life growing up, the songs are relevant to anyone facing the same disadvantages in having no job or even a minimum wage occupation.

Tone Scientizt: Throwback Thursday - Freddie McGregor

As I sifted through my crates of old vinyl, cassettes, and cd’s one day I looked for anything that would strike up a vibe to match the mood I was in. I wanted to listen to some “chune”, some real good reggae music. Nothing too laid back and not too jumpy. Then as riddims started playing in my head I looked up and thought to just put one of my iTunes playlists on shuffle. The first song that played was an oldie but goodie from Freddie McGregor, O.D. (Order of Distinction)

Tone Scientizt: WIND ME UP CHUCK - WILL CRANK FOREVER!

If your from the Washington, DC and surrounding area there’s a HUGE appreciation and so much love for The GODFather of Go-Go music. When people outside of DC think G0-Go they think Chuck Brown.  I remember growing up wanting to tag along with my uncle and older cousins to the go-go’s…(had to get a little older to do that) I had my share of Go-Go’s growing up.

Mr. Vegas :: Sweet Jamaica

Dancehall singjay Mr. Vegas released his album Sweet Jamaica this week and I must say I’m starting to notice a trend. As with the recent releases from Romain Virgo and Busy Signal, Sweet Jamaica is also a calling to the days of old. Mr. Vegas’ album is full of vintage melodies with fresh lyrics creating a sort of revival to the foundation of reggae music.  Read More.....
